Based on the primacy of the individual

Our care philosophy is based on the primacy of the individual. To this end, the Institute is enthusiastically engaged in the improvement of the care experience and quality of life of all those who make use of our services, as well as members of their family—all while helping to improve the quality of our institution’s work environment. This approach is inspired in large part by the Plan d’action en santé mentale 2015-2020, putting emphasis on the primacy of the individual.

Code of Ethics

The Institut’s Code of Ethics clarifies patient rights, outlines their responsibilities, and specifies the practices that stem from these for personnel when it comes to respecting the following: the individual, property, freedom of action and opinion, surroundings and quality of life, and the ability to access care and services. The Code of Ethics states values and determines the fundamental rules that patients and personnel must follow.

Security of Care and Services

The vision we have adopted for patients and modern clinical practice is based on a partnership that, for the patient, consists of playing an active role while respecting their rights, duties, and abilities. This vision must be fulfilled in the context of care given under legal constraints within a secure healthcare facility.

Due to obligations associated with warrants of detention, certain measures of protection, control, or restriction of freedom are justified by an assurance that the patient remains safe throughout their treatment path. These measures must also guarantee that all those who share daily life with patients can do so in a safe environment using proven risk management based on the understanding of clinical dynamics. Only though these conditions can a real helping relationship develop between those with an elevated potential for violence who need help, and the clinicians who accompany them through their hospital journey. The restriction of freedoms—which are not the goal of our mandate—are merely a prerequisite and a means by which to establish a relationship.

Our mission, vision, and values being well established, these are the principles that guided the development of our clinical and academic project:

  • The clinical project aims to support patients in their rehabilitation and ability to become full citizens.
  • The clinical project is part of a framework of tiered services.
  • Clinical orientations are based on psychiatric-justice best practices.
  • When it comes to providing services, the clinical project promotes an integrated vision of programs offered by the establishment and interdisciplinary work.
  • The clinical project’s success depends on our ability to offer a sufficient number of qualified, valued human resources.
  • The integration of university teaching and research in the healthcare milieu, as well as the development of scientific knowledge in psychiatric justice, are an integral part of the clinical project. The Direction de la recherche et de l’enseignement universitaire must support the evaluation of clinical practices and their impact on all clientele in an optimal model of care performance, pertinence, quality, and safety, as well as efficiency and effectiveness.
  • The preferred clinical project and organization model is dependent on a clear division of roles between healthcare, public safety, and court establishments.
