Psychology Department – Internships and Work Placements
The Psychology Department reports to the Professional Services Directorate, and comprises an internal manager, external manager, and some 20 psychologists. These psychologists are allocated to different healthcare programs, either in internal or external units or a combination of the two. All key theoretical orientations are represented, including neuropsychology.
The Psychology Department provides evaluation services and treatment for clientele who generally suffer from serious mental illness and issues with violence. These also frequently present with comorbid conditions, notably personality disorders (group B), issues related to substance abuse, cognitive limitations, depressive and anxious symptomology, or neurological disorders.
Psychologists lead individual and group therapy sessions as well as other specialized therapeutic activities. In collaboration with criminologists, they also evaluate risks of violence using specialized tools. Some psychologists and neuropsychologists contribute to the complex expertise process by performing in-depth psychological and/or neuropsychological evaluations.
Psychologists take part in the Department’s monthly administrative and clinical meetings, where subjects touch on professional psychology practice at hospitals in the Québec healthcare network as well as at our own psychiatric hospital (including: clinical practice, evaluation, rules of practice, code of ethics, training and professional development, supervision, internships, evaluation tools, and development of the profession).
Some psychologists are involved in teaching assignments and supervision, while others participate in work committees or other projects in the department or at the hospital.
The department offers observation internships for students at the Bachelor level and clinical internships in psychology and neuropsychology for students completing their Doctorate.
