About

As part of its national mission, the Institut national de psychiatrie légale Philippe-Pinel plays a leading role when it comes to best practices in forensic psychiatry. It’s with this in mind that the Institut helped create the Unité d’évaluation des technologies et des modes d’intervention en santé mentale, justice et sécurité (UETMI-SMJS).
The purpose of this unit is to support the decision making of practitioners and administrators in order to ensure the use of best practices, as determined by research data. The UETMI-SMJS works in collaboration with clinic, research, and education management, helps identify and analyze evidence, and participates in the exchange and transfer of experimental knowledge and research.

The UETMI-SMJS is a member of the Communauté de pratique en Évaluation des technologies et modes d’intervention (ETMI) en santé et en services sociaux au Québec.

Process and Team

Identifying best practices is done via a thorough review of scientific literature. This process begins with a clear request for the evaluation of a technology or intervention. This request can be initiated by:

  • Policy makers (e.g. Ministry of Health and Social Services, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Public Health)
  • Management
  • Practitioners
  • Organizations representing users
  • Third-party payers

The UETMI-SMJS is under the leadership of the Department of Research and Education:

  • Anne Crocker, Director of Research and Education
  • Jeanne Vachon, Assistant Director of Research and Education

UETMI-SMJS’s permanent team is made up of:

  • Ashley Lemieux, Planning, Programming, and Research Officer
  • Hongyue Pan, Information Officer
Every request received by the UETMI-SMJS is evaluated and prioritized by the permanent team. The team works in collaboration with those making the request to determine the methodology and expected product based on need, resources, and time allotted.
