Mission
The Institut’s mission is made up of four parts, each of which focuses on the well-being of patients and staff, as well as the safety of patients, staff, and the general public—all while consistently ensuring that the quality of our services and resources is rigorously monitored and improved.
Our mission is to :
- evaluate and treat patients who have an elevated risk of violent behaviour
- teach at the college and university levels
- carry out fundamental clinical research
- prevent violence
Our facility’s ultra-specialized mission and university vocation have imparted us with a unique role and responsibilities. The Institut works to :
- conduct evaluations to determine if patients are dangerous or long-term offenders
- evaluate, detain, and treat accused individuals found not criminally responsible, especially those who are high risk
- evaluate, detain, and treat accused individuals declared unfit to stand trial or found not criminally responsible and subject to strict detention due to the elevated risk they pose to public safety
- evaluate, detain, and treat accused adults or adolescents subject to mandatory evaluation or treatment of their mental state and who present a very high risk to public safety or a complex syndrome (comorbidities, homelessness, sexual offences, etc.)
- teach and provide internship opportunities in forensic psychiatry (subspecialties and psychiatry)
- conduct psychiatric/justice/public safety research
- manage violence
- develop activities to transfer knowledge, share learnings, and support the evolution of practices
