The psychology and neuropsychology internship at the Institut national de psychiatrie légale Philippe-Pinel is part of the Université de Montréal Consortium.
Internship prerequisites:
- Specific interest in psychiatry and violence
- Having completed practica or a previous psychiatric internship in a hospital milieu, 2nd line, or at a university institute in mental health
- Theoretical psychopathology knowledge (assessment and diagnosis)
- Theoretical and functional knowledge of standard psychometric tools (Wechsler scale, objective personality tests, projective tests)
- Theoretical and practical psychotherapy knowledge
- Functional English (bilingualism required for psycho-legal expertise programs as well as the F1 unit)
Goals and objectives of the psychology and neuropsychology internship:
- Provide an opportunity to discover the practice of psychology in a 3rd line maximum security psychiatric milieu.
- Provide complementary experience for internship programs in general psychiatry.
- Enable students to refine their clinical understanding and techniques for interviewing and intervention.
- Provide opportunities to learn how to adjust psychological work with individuals suffering from severe and complex pathologies with multiple comorbidities.
Supervision Details
- At least 200 hours for an internship of 1,600 hours
- At least 100 hours for an internship of 800 hours
Supervising psychologists are generally paired in order to provide greater internal access to different facets of our mandates, as well as various aspects of our facility’s clientele. For example, an internship will include a combination of rehabilitation units and psycho-legal expertise.
Other types of supervision may also be provided (group supervision, one-way mirror, etc.).

- Monthly clinical and administrative meetings
- Seminars on complex psychology cases
- Seminars related to legal psychology
- Specialized training (evaluation tools, risk of violence, etc.)
- Scientific conferences organized by the Research and University Education Department
- Public symposiums organized by the Research and University Education Department

- Internship request for students from a Québec university (French only)
- Letter of presentation
- CV specifying clinical experience and supervision received (professional milieu, type of clientele)
- Copy of university transcripts
- Copy of the agreement between the university of origin and the Québec university (e.g. internship or work placement agreement)
- Two letters of reference
